The Cardigan

The Cardigan

As the weather cools, there should be some new additions to the daily wardrobe. One item that every man should have is the cardigan, no not your granddad’s oversized cardigan, but a well fitted one that can go snugly over your dress shirts. They are versatile items that can be worn in many stylish ways and still keep you warm.

If suits aren’t required, simply wear your cardigan over your dress shirt with all the buttons buttoned. There is nothing wrong with leaving your buttons opened, but having them buttoned up will make you appear more kempt and sharp, especially with a tie. When the temperature is not an issue, you can drape your cardigan over your shoulders and tie the sleeves loosely around your neck or your waist. Remember to button up all the buttons. Of course if you are sitting in your cubicle all day and don’t plan on leaving the building, it is be better to just leave it draped over your seat.

How deep the v-neck is also affects the overall look. When the first button starts higher on the chest, it is better to keep it as the outerwear. If it starts lower towards the lower chest, it can look great under a suit jacket or blazer. As shown in the picture below, the cardigan nicely compliments the tie but isn’t intrusive enough to ruin the formalness of the look.

Solid colored cardigans can also come in handy for toning down your patterned dress shirts. Darker patterned dress shirts are great for the fall but can be too overwhelming at certain work environments or occasions. If you wear a solid color cardigan over it leaving only your shirt collar exposed, it suddenly becomes bearable and more sophisticated.

To prepare for the cooling weather, compliment your dress shirts with a new cardigan.
