For the shorter man, the key to looking good is to add length to the body and not width. To do this, consider tailoring the tail of the dress shirt only about 2 inches below the waist as opposed to the usual 4 inches. This will prevent the illusion of having shorter legs when you leave your shirt untucked. The dress shirt for the shorter man should also be slim fitted with the armholes higher and tighter around the armpits. This will prevent the puffiness that tends to give men the unwanted weight. Exposing the neck can also create an elongated look. If work permits, allow one or two buttons to hang loose.

Dress shirt for the taller man should increase the width and volume rather than length of the torso. Try customizing dress shirts with contrasting collars and cuffs. The apparent sections will make the arms seem shorter and more proportional to the body. The bottom cut of the shirt can also be a little longer for the untucked look.

Additional Tips: The color of the dress shirt can also affect how your body is perceived. Stripes elongate the body while checkered dress shirts overwhelm and consume the body. Wider stripes also tend to make you appear wider. If you are shorter than average and wider around the waist, definitely stay away from bold patterns and wide stripes. However these wide stripes and patterns will actually work well on the taller man by adding more horizontal volume.
