Mens Dress Shirt Sizes – Quickly and Easily
There is a constant problem for all off the rack clothing… it is really hard to say which standard size will be your best fit. I personally use size ‘small’ in Europe, but when traveling abroad this varies a lot.
For mens shirts, here is the trick. Get the FREE Men’s Button Down Dress Shirt Guide. On all decent off the rack mens shirts a label designates the size be it small, medium, large etc. Below the size there are two numbers. The first one tells you what your neck size is.

Neck Size:
This is a quick and easy way to check which size will fit you. Wrap a measurement tap around your neck and place one finger between the tape and your neck. Note down the number.
Now in the shop find the size that corresponds to that neck measurement. For example in Europe small is 37 cms and in the USA it is 15 inches.
If you don’t have abnormally long arms this measurement alone will give you the right size. Of course if you want something that you can be sure will fit across your chest and stomach area you will have to go for the fitted shirts (such as slim fit). However, tailored shirts are always the best bet.
Arm Length:
On some shirts, arm length is also given with the standard size, below the neck size. To get this one right, measure from the middle of your upper back behind your neck along your arm ending at your first thumb knuckle. Keep your arm straight. You will need someone to help you on this.
In the end, it all really comes down to the neck size, because if your arms don’t fit the shirt with the right neck size you know that you are probably not made for off the rack shirts. Find a tailor!
