For years yellow was my favorite color and although I have grown out of it, it still has its charm in my eyes. A yellow dress shirt that isn’t too bright but slightly subtle is the right one (pastel). In fact, most yellows come in this shade and shouldn’t be too hard to find.

Do consider what other colors you will be wearing though. Orange or other bright colors usually doesn’t fit well with it and try to avoid black you may get the bumble bee look. We suggest matching it with something in the medium range such as grey or brown.

Try getting a yellow dress shirt with white collar or cuffs.

What most people don’t know is that it is actually not the heat that makes dress shirts smaller in the dryer. When shirts are manufactured they are typically stretched out to make more fabric for less. When these fabrics are finally being tumble dried they become smaller, but the reason for this phenomena is surprising to most people….

Grab our FREE Men’s Button Down Dress Shirt Guide if you have not already. Sign up in the column to the right.

Shirts become smaller in the dryer because they are bounced off the walls, not because of the heat in the dryer. In fact, the heat actually makes them larger.

Washing makes the shirt shrink

It remains true that washing a shirt, that has not been pre-washed by the manufacturer, makes a shirt shrink. The shrinkage increases with the heat of the water. Our suggestion: wash all your shirts in the safe zone… 30 degrees Celsius.

For the last two years, the small shirt collar has really become a hit among most large modern brands. It is a fashion statement, but the question is; where is the right place to use it? Read on to find out why this kind of collar is not suitable for the office.

If you are interested in more tips and guides on dress shirts get our extensive FREE Men’s Button Down Dress Shirt Guide by filling in your email to the right.

The small shirt collar is a great collar…. for leisure… wear it in the park, when you are out clubbing, or when your on a date. But don’t wear it in the office.

You can’t wear it with a tie

First off the only tie you can wear with this collar the slim ties and usually that will only work if you are in an industry where you have to make a fashion statement. If you wear it with the larger ties it will be hard to keep it from popping out the back of the collar and in turn look unprofessional.

Relaxed look

This shirt collar gives the most relaxed look of the all the shirt collars (except the Mao collar) and that’s why it really is not a good choice to wear for a formal day at work. If you are at work and want to look trendy and professional go for the double button collar.

Still a cool shirt collar

Brands like Diesel, Levis, Armani, D&G all use these small collars as a major part of their fashionable shirt collections. They go really well with good jeans (as do most shirts with an exception of those with French cuffs). So if you do like to wear shirts in your time off work, try a small shirt collar.

Most of us can agree that Brad Pitt has great style and especially when it comes to dress shirts, but what is it about his style that really makes it look so sophisticated and cool?

We have gathered five pictures of Pitt showing what he typically would wear when it comes to shirts to show you what it is that they all have in common. The conclusion is resounding…

Of course Brad Pitt has a very fit body and that definetly helps the look of a shirt, no doubt about it. But lets look at the colors and patterns he wears.

This is an example of a leisure shirt where the pattern is simple and not bold, this is in fact how all his shirts are.

The Secret

Brad Pitt and his fashion advisors know what they are doing. They are keeping it simple! Brad Pitt generally wears dress shirts that are solid in color with a pattern that is simple and not very bold.

That is his secret: Simple and Toned Down.

To carry this out though you will need shirts that fit well and that is when you most likely will have to consult your tailor.

Good luck on your quest to look like Brad Pitt! Hey at least we can start with the shirts.

There are lots of dress shirt collars available from tailors nowadays, but usually the height of the shirt collar stops at two buttons. Two buttons already looks bold and does make a statement, but recently I stumbled upon this Japanese tailor who makes three button collars. I know I know, it’s not like it is completely out of this world, but the way they had done this makes it look really good. Great way to make an extra statement. Read what collars would suit you in our free FREE Men’s Button Down Dress Shirt Guide. The picture clearly shows that the inside collar contrast fabric is too bold, but it is the bold 3 button collar that should be emphasized.

Don’t forget that this is NOT a shirt collar for men with short necks (they will look even shorter with this shirt collar). Read more about that in our Dress Shirt Collar Guide.

Most shirts don’t have split yokes nowadays. However, many shirt makers claim that a split yoke gives the shirts a better fit. Many good tailors have this option and generally if made correctly it does give a good fit, but it also changes the style of the shirt (on the back).

What is a split yoke? Some of you may actually wonder what a split yoke actually is. Well it is top back part of the dress shirt between the shoulders.

What to go for:

It really is a very subjective matter however, in many circles a split yoke does

Get the FREE Men’s Button Down Dress Shirt Guide.

give a slight impression of quality and it also may tell people you know a little bit more about mens shirts than the average Joe.

Design wise, stay away from split yokes when stripes are very strong (stripes such as yellows, greens, or reds). However, stripes that are not too bold can work very well on a split yoke though.

Split yokes are generally a rare find, but at tailors it is often a possibility. So as we always say here always choose a tailored shirt if you can get away with it.

Quality designer shirts hit marketing merchandise to become a new valuable twist to promotional products.

The recent expansion of the online custom shirt maker, ShirtsMyWay.biz, into custom company dress shirts (shirts with logos), paves the way for what they predict is an upcoming trend; quality and designer company shirts. ShirtsMyWay.biz is launching their international website today based on this idea and with free design and marketing consultation.

“It is becoming apparent that many companies who have shirts made with logos often find out, too late, that the shirts don’t live up to their company identity. This is usually due to a lack of personal guidance and professional marketing input on the side of the shirt maker. Many companies are losing out or don’t know the marketing potential of their shirts” say Peter Crawfurd and Michael Yang, founders of www.ShirtsMyWay.biz.

ShirtsMyWay.biz founders Michael Yang and Peter Crawfurd have encountered numerous examples of how an improved design and fit of today’s logo shirts can help significantly increase the chance of the shirt from being a promotional product into a garment someone wears for pleasure. Although company shirts are for promotional purposes, company shirts are becoming more modern and fashionable.

Company Shirts with Fashion Trends

For certain companies, looking ‘cool’ is a big part of their image and that includes following certain fashion trends. This becomes possible with company shirts only when the shirt is fully customizable and usually when personal consultation is involved.

Today, thousands of companies use dress shirts as marketing merchandise, from airline uniforms, bartenders, waiters, to high end product promotion, however most of them lack the touch of quality and design that in turn positively increases customers or potential customers’ perception of one’s brand.

Peter Crawfurd and Michael Yang claims that they will personally consult anyone about company shirts for free. Contact them through their newly launched website, www.ShirtsMyWay.biz.

How should a dress shirt fit?

Aesthetics are important, but comfort is king. Pay particular attention to the way a shirt feels around your neck and through the shoulders – if it`s constricting or baggy in any area it will look sloppy and you should find other options. Think about your lifestyle too. “If you`re going to sit at a computer all day, you`ll probably not be comfortable in a slim fit model,” says John Liguori, General Manager at Thomas Pink`s Madison Avenue store. A great way to determine the best fit is to try the shirt on under a suit jacket. “Aesthetically, two fingers between the top of your collar and top of your suit jacket is the perfect balance between strangulation and sagginess,” says Liguori. “As for your cuffs, no more than ¼ to ½ of an inch of shirt should be visible beyond the coat sleeve.” Don`t think that means you have to buy longer than you need though. “In most instances, a man`s jacket sleeve is too long rather than the shirt being too short.”

What types of shirts should every man own?

Thomas Pink`s Michael Bragg says, “A white shirt, a pale blue, a Bengal stripe, and something with texture, like herringbone.” Shirts with bold colors and patterns are too recognizable to be worn on a consistent basis, so splurge on the basics.

Is a pocket indicative of a cheap shirt?

No – and don`t let anyone tell you otherwise. “The pocket is an American original designed with utilitarian purpose,” says Bragg. You might not see a pocket on European designs, but if you like a pocket on your shirt, then by all means, get a pocket on your shirt.”

How can a man look better in his shirt regardless of what it costs?

Dress for the occasion and launder with care. Collars which need a tie to stand up shouldn`t be worn without one; for a more casual look choose a button-down version. Details like French cuffs are only for formal environments and must be worn with cufflinks – only your girlfriend is allowed to break that rule. When you launder a dress shirt, have it dry cleaned or washed in cold water. Dry it on low heat and never use bleach or starch– both can destroy the cloth`s fibers.
